Here’s a simple itinerary to explore these facets:
Morning
Grab a coffee at Engine House Coffee. Located in a renovated 1868 fire house, this downtown café serves up delicious coffees and teas. Kentucky State Capitol. Start your day with a visit to the Kentucky State Capitol located at 700 Capitol Ave, Frankfort, KY 40601. Take a guided tour of the Capitol building to learn about its history, architecture, and the state’s government. After your visit to the State Capitol, don’t overlook Daniel Boone’s Grave located in the historic Frankfort Cemetery at 215 E. Main St., Frankfort, KY 40601. Daniel and Rebecca Boone, his wife, were the first to be laid to rest in the cemetery. Since that time thousands of Frankfort’s citizens have joined them including many famous Kentuckians – from Governors and soldiers, statesmen and business owners.
Lunch
Downtown Frankfort. Explore the downtown area of Frankfort, where you’ll find a variety of charming cafes and restaurants offering local cuisine. We highly recommend Bourbon on Main at 103 W Main St, Frankfort, KY 40601. We think you’ll enjoy this cozy pub in a red brick structure, offering hearty American fare, beer, cocktails & outdoor tables.
Afternoon
Liberty Hall Historic Site. For a fun and educational afternoon, head to Liberty Hall at 202 Wilkinson Street, Frankfort, KY 40601. Located on the banks of the Kentucky River, this 1796 Federal structure was home to the Browns, one of Kentucky’s most important families who were leaders in politics, community, business and education and also appreciated fine art and architecture. The two homes located on the site, Liberty Hall and the Orlando Brown House, are both architecturally significant and contain many of the families’ artistic treasures.
Art in Frankfort. Visit the Capital City Museum located at 325 Ann Street Frankfort, KY 40601. Explore over 200 years of politics, architecture, enterprise, and everyday life in Frankfort. Located across from the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, the Capital city Museum is in the heart of downtown Frankfort. Also, plan to visit the Frankfort Public Art Tour for a deeper look at the Capital City. Discover its historic architecture, stained-glass windows, murals, statues, and ultimately its people.
Evening
Conclude your day with a delicious dinner at Limewater Bistro. Old State Capitol. If you have time, visit the Old State Capitol located at 300 W Broadway St, Frankfort, KY 40601. Explore this historic building, which served as the seat of Kentucky’s government from 1830 to 1910. The Old State Capitol offers guided tours and exhibits highlighting its role in Kentucky’s political history. Admission here also includes admission to Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History and the Kentucky Military History Museum.
